A hotel for the ages
Proudly independent and privately owned for 30+ yearsWelcome to the Prince Rupert Hotel: a haven in the heart of historic Shrewsbury – and the only AA four-star-rated hotel in town.
The Prince Rupert is a special place with a prestigious reputation. Visit and you'll soon see why. This is not a boutique hotel or a flimsy imitation. It's a living piece of history – a Grade II*-listed 17th-century building with parts dating back to Norman times. A palace of period features and hand-picked antiques, tastefully enhanced with plush modern comforts.
For you, our guest, this means the best of the old and the new. When you stay with us, you can sleep under Tudor beams and relax in the garden of Shrewsbury's oldest secular building. Yet you'll also enjoy the comfort of a pocket-sprung bed, sleek ensuite facilities and free WiFi in every room.
You can expect nice surprises, too. Like the warm, genuine smile that greets you at the reception desk. The offer to take your bags. The roaring fire and the complimentary sherry. It's service as it used to be – and it's meant to be. Come. Enjoy it. Make yourself at home.
History and mysteries
There's history in every corner of our hotel. We've occupied the same site for more than 900 years – and some sections of our building are almost as old as Shrewsbury's famous sandstone castle.
You'll see it in the oak-panelled walls and exposed wooden beams. You'll hear it in the creaking floors – a symptom of age, not neglect. And you'll sense the stories in the walls. The feeling that you're walking in the noble footsteps of the hotel's many prior inhabitants – including the real Prince Rupert, grandson of King James I.
Some even believe that those prior inhabitants are still around.
Yes, our hotel has something of a reputation for the paranormal. So much so, in fact, that we were featured on an episode of Yesterday's Great British Ghosts, hosted by Michaela Strachan.
But don't worry – they're friendly. As far as we know…
Perfectly placed (for 900 years)
The Prince Rupert Hotel is a destination within a destination. Located directly in the centre of the old town, it's the perfect base from which to explore Shrewsbury's medieval alleys, artisan shops and historic attractions.
And it's well worth exploring. The majestic Shrewsbury castle, for instance, is a matter of minutes away. St Alkmund's Church – a Georgian architectural masterpiece – is opposite. And some of the town's finest Tudor buildings and retail gems are hidden among the maze of streets we call home.
Shrewsbury is the kind of place that's easy to fall in love with. We're head over heels – and we're always happy to help our guests make the most of it.
